Types of Citizenship
South African citizenship is governed by the South African Citizenship Act. There are several categories through which an individual may acquire citizenship:
1. Citizenship by Birth
Generally, a person born in South Africa to at least one parent who is a South African citizen or a permanent resident qualifies for citizenship by birth.
2. Citizenship by Descent
A person born outside of South Africa to at least one South African citizen parent may qualify for citizenship by descent, provided their birth is registered in accordance with the Births and Deaths Registration Act.
3. Citizenship by Naturalization
Foreign nationals who have held permanent residence status for a specific period may apply for citizenship by naturalization. This process requires demonstrating residency, good character, and, in some cases, the ability to speak one of the official languages.
