Types of Citizenship
South African citizenship is governed by the South African Citizenship Act. There are several ways in which an individual can acquire or be granted citizenship in South Africa.
1. Citizenship by Birth
Individuals born in South Africa to at least one parent who is a South African citizen or a permanent resident are generally entitled to citizenship by birth.
2. Citizenship by Descent
If you were born outside of South Africa but have a South African parent, you may be eligible to apply for citizenship by descent, provided certain registration requirements are met.
3. Citizenship by Naturalization
This is the most common path for foreign nationals. It typically requires a period of ordinary residence in the country while holding valid permanent residence status. Applicants must meet specific criteria, including good character and a sufficient knowledge of the English language and the responsibilities/privileges of citizenship.
4. Citizenship by Registration
Certain categories, such as children born in South Africa to non-citizens who later become permanent residents, or spouses of South African citizens, may apply for citizenship through the registration process.
